About Amtrak Hiawatha

Amtrak Hiawatha is an intercity train line that has been a part of the nationwide rail network since 1971. The route is named for the historic Hiawatha fleet of trains that were among the world's fastest locomotives in the 1930s and 1940s. Today, Amtrak Hiawatha is Amtrak’s busiest line in the Midwest and the ninth-busiest rail route nationwide.

Amtrak Hiawatha operates an 86-mile route from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Chicago, Illinois. The commute takes just 90 minutes since there are only three stops between Milwaukee and Chicago. These intermediate stops are Milwaukee International Airport, Sturtevant, and Glenview. The route operates seven days per week, with additional departure times on weekdays to serve commuters.

Since the Hiawatha stops at Milwaukee International Airport, travelers can choose between flying directly into Chicago or possibly finding cheaper flights into Milwaukee. From the Milwaukee airport, downtown Chicago is just a quick train ride away on the Hiawatha.

Amtrak Hiawatha trains are equipped with onboard WiFi and a checked baggage service for larger luggage. Passengers can also check bicycles and bring small pets onboard. However, because the Hiawatha covers only a short route, there is no onboard cafe car, and seating options are limited to coach class only.

Amtrak Hiawatha is an official partner of Wanderu and has been one since 2015. Wanderu makes it simple to browse and purchase train tickets for all of Amtrak's services across America. Don't forget to enter your Amtrak Guest Rewards number at checkout to earn valuable points on your purchase.

Chicago to Milwaukee

Pros: Staff very friendly and helpful. I'm disabled and the Red Cap employee pushed me by hand trolley all the way to the train and he loaded my suitcase on the train for me. Excellent service. Cons: The drop off area on Clinton Street for anyone who is handicap leaves alot to be desired. I had to watch out and wait for traffic in order to get out of vehicle. The Clinton St. entrance will work with a little work on handicap drop off area. Tips: Travelers should get there at least 1/2 hour early. It helps for a more relaxed trip.

Cons: The pickup area on Clinton Street needs improvement for handicapped people to get into their pickup vehicle. Tips: Travelers should arrive at least 1/2 hour early. It makes the trip less stressful and turns it into a very enjoyable adventure.
