Kaiserslautern is a historic city in Germany whose founding dates to the 9th century. The area hosted a hunting retreat for Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in the 12th century. It is now one of the country's cultural centres, filled with artistic, historical, and outdoorsy attractions.

The Gartenschau Kaiserslautern is another park, and it appeals especially to kids with its inventive playgrounds and enormous dinosaur models. Finally, the nearby Palatinate Forest offers gorgeous scenery along its many hiking paths.

Named for the river running through the town, Chemnitz is a cultural centre in Saxony, close to Germany's border with Czechia. The city was known as Karl-Marx-Stadt before German reunification, and an enormous bronze sculpture of Karl Marx's head reminds visitors of this legacy. Other notable structures in town include the Red Tower, a remnant of the city's 12-century walls, and the striking Altes Rathaus, or Old Town Hall.
