About Baltimore
Baltimore is a seaport in Maryland best known for its crab cakes and baseball legend, Babe Ruth. As there is plenty to see in Charm City, you'll be singing "Good Morning, Baltimore'' as soon as you experience all of the sights and activities this quirky town has to offer.
Some of Baltimore's most impressive attractions are centered in and around Inner Harbor. This scenic waterfront is filled with historic ships, dating as far back as the Civil War in the case of the USS Constellation. Alongside shops and restaurants, Inner Harbor also hosts the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, and several entertainment venues where you can catch live music. Enjoy a bird's-eye view of the harbor from atop Federal Hill Park, or if you prefer the view that inspired "The Star Spangled Banner," head out to Fort McHenry, known for its role in the War of 1812.
Baltimore is one of the stops on Wanderu's recommended East Coast wine tour, but don't worry about racking up a hefty tab; luckily, Baltimore is also one of the cheapest drinking cities in the U.S., with the cheapest bottle of beer going for just $1.42. Enjoy your wine or beer along the Avenue in Hampden, a neighborhood known for its hipster bars, restaurants, and boutiques.
Ready to plan your Baltimore adventure? Numerous bus and train options make Baltimore affordably accessible by ground transportation, and Baltimore-Washington International Airport not only offers hundreds of daily flights, it also is one of the best airports for food in the U.S.

Opened in 2016, the station serves as the main stop near Downtown Baltimore for the two largest bus carriers that conduct trips in and out of the city – Greyhound and Peter Pan Bus Lines. The station is served by only one line of Baltimore’s transit bus network. However, a connection is also available to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County bus system. All of these are accessible by CityLink buses that you can catch near the Baltimore Downtown Bus Station, the busiest bus station in Baltimore, although you unfortunately won’t find direct bus routes between the station and your destination.
Inner Harbor is a great spot because of its easy access to the National Aquarium, museums, and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Additionally, there are some great budget options in downtown Baltimore, which is also easily accessible from the Baltimore Downtown Bus Station.
Baltimore has several options for getting around. CityLink buses run throughout the city, and the stops nearest Baltimore Downtown Bus Station can be found at the corners of Bush and Russell streets just a 3-minute walk away.
For tourists, the Charm City Circulator is a great option. It’s a free bus service between Baltimore’s most popular sites, including Fort McHenry and the Baltimore Museum of Art. A bus arrives every 10 minutes at each stop along the 4 Charm City Circulator routes.
Or to make your transportation really fun, check out the Baltimore Water Taxi. An unlimited one-day adult ticket is $10.
Fort McHenry, the spot that inspired “The Star Spangled Banner” during the 1814 Battle of Baltimore, is definitely a top tourist attraction. Charm City also has a selection of great museums, including the Walters Art Museum, the American Visionary Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Make sure to visit Inner Harbor and its collection of historic ships (the oldest is the USS Constellation, which saw action in the Civil War). The National Aquarium is also in the Inner Harbor area, and Oriole Park at Camden Yards is in walking distance.
Finally, stop by the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum before heading over to Poe’s gravesite and imitating the infamous “Poe Toaster.”
Baltimore is known for crab cakes, pit beef and Berger cookies. The cookies you can purchase at markets and bakeries all over the city and get pretty much the same thing, but there’s a bit more variation when it comes to crab cakes and pit beef. The classic Baltimore crab cake can be found at Faidley Seafood, but you can find great crab cakes all across town.
Chaps Pit Beef is a popular spot for this Baltimore delicacy, made of thin-sliced top round that’s been grilled over charcoal and then served on a Kaiser roll. Pioneer also has great pit beef, but be prepared: they only accept cash, and the seating is limited to picnic tables, so you may want to skip it on a rainy day.
Other popular Baltimore restaurants include Woodberry Kitchen, Charleston, Ida B’s Table and The Food Market.
Maryland crabs are in-season from April through the end of November, so if you’re looking forward to eating some crab, make sure to factor that into your travel plans.
The weather is especially comfortable in April through June, and Baltimore’s summer festival season starts picking up at the end of May. May or June are the best months to visit, depending on whether or not you’re interested in attending some festivals.
