About Amtrak Cascades

The Amtrak Cascades is a passenger train service operated by Amtrak that serves the Pacific Northwest. The train line runs between Vancouver, BC and Eugene, OR, connecting a total of 12 cities, including Seattle and Portland.

Railroads have offered train service between Portland and Seattle since 1925, and Amtrak took over passenger rail operations of the route in 1971. Amtrak is the largest passenger train service in America, and after adding the Portland to Seattle service to its national railroad network, the train carrier expanded the line north into British Columbia and further south into Oregon. In 1999, the service was renamed the Cascades after the majestic Cascade mountain range that the route parallels, with individual trains named after mountain peaks in the Northwest like Mount Rainier and Mount Hood. Although Amtrak’s Coast Starlight also offers train service from Seattle to Eugene, the Cascades is the only Amtrak train which travels into Vancouver, BC.

The Cascades runs 156 daily trips and, depending on your route and when you book your ticket, you can expect to pay between DKK 24.42 and DKK 824.21. While on board, you can enjoy free WiFi, power outlets, reclining seats, and you’ll be able to purchase snacks and refreshments, including regional coffee, microbrews, and wines, from Amtrak’s Café Service. The Cascades is known as one of Amtrak's most scenic train routes, so don't miss the views of the Columbia River Gorge and other spectacular natural landscapes, best experienced from the Lounge Car.

Amtrak is an official Wanderu partner, which means you can search and book the cheapest available Amtrak Cascades tickets for your travels right here. Don't forget to enter your Amtrak Guest Rewards number at check-out so you can earn points to help you travel on this gorgeous line again and again.

Pros: Was my first train experience. I liked the spacious and comfy seating. I also enjoyed the beverages offered. And of course I really loved the views of the towns as we made our way to Seattle. Cons: There was a group of riders who were very loud. I don't think there is much Amtrak could do about that, but maybe something to look into - Rider noise control. Tips: Always be mindful of your volume while speaking on the train.

Amtrak Cascades Train Guide & FAQs

Do Amtrak Cascades trains have WiFi?

Yes, Amtrak Cascades offers WiFi on their trains. Although most trips with Amtrak Cascades will have WiFi as advertised, some trains might not come equipped with WiFi and onboard WiFi can lose its connection in rural areas. We recommend you bring a book or download a movie just to play it safe. Amtrak Cascades WiFi is generally best used for surfing the web, checking emails and chatting with friends; you shouldn’t count on the WiFi to binge watch your favorite show.

Are there power points or USB points on the train?

Yes, there are power points onboard Amtrak Cascades trains. You can generally find one or two sockets per row of seats, so be a good traveller and check if your seat neighbour might want to charge up their devices as well. With the onboard power points, you can charge both a computer and USB devices with a power point USB converter that typically comes with most phones and tablets.

Since Amtrak Cascades might sometimes use replacement train vehicles, not all trips are guaranteed to have power points. We recommend to bring a power bank to charge your phone for all trips over 2 hours, just in case.

What is Amtrak Cascades's schedule?

On a typical day, Amtrak Cascades has 156 scheduled train trips in total. However, the exact departure and arrival times vary depending on the day and route. The best way to find the exact schedule for your trip is to use the search tool on this page.

Can you pick up will call tickets at the station?

No, Amtrak Cascades does not offer will call tickets. You should purchase your tickets online and make sure you have everything you need to board before you arrive at the station.

Do you need an ID to get on the train?

Yes, Amtrak Cascades requires you to present an ID to an agent to be allowed to board the train. Make sure you have identification issued by a government agency that meets the carrier’s requirements. Alternative IDs, such as a college ID, won’t work.

Are there toilets on Amtrak Cascades trains?

Yes, there are bathrooms on Amtrak Cascades trains. The bathrooms are pretty basic and include a toilet, toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Most bathrooms don’t have running water. As you will be using a bathroom on a moving vehicle, please use caution and hold on to a rail at all times.

Are meals or drinks offered during the trip?

Amtrak Cascades provides snacks to satisfy your hunger during your travels. Be sure to pack a credit card and some cash in case you get hungry.

Do you have to print your Amtrak Cascades ticket?

Amtrak Cascades does not require a printed ticket to board the train. Instead, an eTicket is sent to you by email when you make your reservation. You can use your smartphone to show this eTicket to the ticketing agent as you board.

Does Amtrak Cascades offer any premium features like extra legroom or movies?

Amtrak Cascades goes the extra distance to deliver premium features to its customers.

Do you find yourself squished in a regular seat or just love having extra room to sprawl out? Well you’re in luck as Amtrak Cascades offers extra legroom seating. Since there is no standard of what extra legroom is, the extra space you get may vary between train lines, but getting extra is always good.
