VIA Rail

Pros: All Via rail staff were exceptional, from checking in to the actual staff on the train. Tips: If you want to save money bring your own food supplies, we were able to put our little cooler in between train cars and use it as a “fridge”! Also bring instant coffee/ hot chocolate as they will bring you hot water so you can make your own.

Churchill is a town in the far north of Manitoba, located on the shores of Hudson Bay. Unforgettable encounters with nature await in Manitoba for all seasons. Churchill is called the polar bear capital of the world since these captivating animals live in the area during the fall. Guided safaris in tundra vehicles are popular to see wild polar bears from a safe distance. You can also kayak with beluga whales in the Churchill River in the summer, go bird watching during favorable weather, and experience dog sledding year-round. In the winter, Churchill offers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the Northern Lights.

Churchill is filled with these incredible experiences and more, so it's no wonder the hotels and lodges in town fill up with reservations quickly. Despite the small population, Churchill has many excellent restaurants to cater to visitors, including the Lazy Bear Cafe and the Tundra Inn. Remember to pack your heavy winter gear, because Churchill has a sub-arctic (read: very cold!) climate.

You can travel to Churchill by plane or by train. The northern community is so remote that there are no roads to Churchill, which means you can't take the bus or drive yourself. VIA Rail runs trains from Winnipeg to Churchill twice a week, and though the journey takes two days, it is worth it for the magnificent views of the Great White North from the train's panoramic dome car.
