It's hard to decide where to go first in this city full of architecturally-beautiful historical buildings. The Vieux-Lille is possibly one of the most striking areas, filled with many ornate buildings. This old-town area of Lille demonstrates the true Flemish soul of the city. Visit the Place du General-de-Gaulle or the Vieille Bourse (a stock exchange from the 1600s!) for a taste of the city's history, or simply wander through the cobblestone streets to discover many local cafes.
During your visit to Lille, you must sample the foods and drinks that the region is famous for. Northern France hosts an amazing beer scene, with many craft bars offering a truly French-Flemish experience. Plus, Lille's proximity to Belgium means you are never too far away from waffles. Belgian-style waffles have delighted the people of Lille for over 250 years, and you will be able to see why as soon as you taste one.

Lille also has a small airport, offering direct flights from nearby countries. The cheapest mode of transport is often traveling by bus. Grenoble is a city in the French Alps known as a major center of research and innovation. A can't miss activity is taking the cable car 260 meters above the town to the 19-century fortress, La Bastille. Explore the mountainside area and enjoy the panoramic views of the city and its many surrounding mountain ranges. These mountains are, of course, ideal for hiking, climbing, and skiing. Nearby ski resorts are Autrans in the Vercors and Chamrousse in Belledonne.
Back in town, check out the Palace of the Parliament of Dauphiné, constructed in the 15th-century, and the Musée de l'Ancien Évêché, in a former bishop's palace, to learn about Grenoble's history. The city has many more museums, but its eponymous Museum of Grenoble is worth prioritizing for its extensive collection of artworks from masters such as Ruben, Gauguin, Renoir, Picasso, and more.
The majority of travelers to Grenoble take the train from Paris or Lyon. Additional SNCF trains connect the city to destinations across the country. BlaBlaCar Bus and FlixBus also serve Grenoble, with routes from Valence, Annecy, Bordeaux, and more.
