The Vermonter is an Amtrak passenger train that connects St. Albans, VT to Washington, D.C. by way of New York City, with stops in a total of 29 cities. The train line provides easy access to several towns across Vermont where visitors can go skiing or snowboarding at world-famous winter resorts like Killington and Sugarbush, or simply enjoy the fresh air and unique nature of the Green Mountain National Forest.

The Vermonter has been in operation since 1995 when it replaced Amtrak’s Montrealer line. On average, the service carries about 100,000 passengers per year. Cons: Move faster, stock the train with food and wifi, and most importantly tell your conductors to stop hitting people with the train. Tips: Stand clear of the tracks, be more respectful and quiet, and anticipate severe delays.

Pros: Everything went smoothly, despite it being one of the coldest days of the year. Cons: It may have been beyond Amtrak's control, but the car never finally felt warm. My assumption was that the temperature outside was too low for the interior heaters to overcome. I kept my overcoat, hat and gloves on throughout, which was adequate to keep me more or less confortable.

All Amtrak Vermonter tickets can be cancelled for a full refund within the first 24 hours after purchase. If more than 24 hours have passed, the cancellation policy and change fee structure for Amtrak bookings depend on the type of fare you purchased:

Saver Fare tickets: A 25% fee applies for any changes. If you cancel the trip, you will receive an eVoucher worth 75% of the original ticket price.

Value Fare tickets: No change fees and fully refundable up to 15 or more days before departure. If cancelled less than 14 days before departure, a 25% cancellation fee applies.
