Pros: Scenic, easy way to travel - Dean who worked on my pacific surf liner train southbound was very kind and helpful. He understood that there was no place to stand in coach unless you were right on top of someone else. And he helped me upgrade my ticket to business. Cons: Communication between phone staff and actual in person train/bus operators can be improved. They seemed very confused that folks only had one ticket when we needed to transfer from Oceanside to Irvine by bus, saying we should also have a bus ticket. When I called, the phone rep told me that the same ticket should work and that I just needed to transfer to an Amtrak bus. If a different ticket is needed then Amtrak should simply provide it via email. Many travelers were confused and stressed. Tips: Buy a business class ticket. Coach does not guarantee you a seat.
