Does VIA Rail allow pets?

Yes, you can travel with a pet on VIA Rail. You must make special pet reservation after you've purchased your ticket. The pet must fit inside a carrier with a total weight of pet and carrier not to exceed 10kg or 22 pounds.

Can I bring my bike on Via Rail?

You can bring one bike onboard per adult ticket. A typical train has place for 12 bikes. Your bike should not be in any carrier or otherwise covered.

Can I cancel and get a refund for my VIA Rail ticket?

Yes, you can cancel a VIA Rail ticket. The easiest way to do this is online on the VIA website. A cancellation fee will apply and the website will advise you on what that amount will be.

Is there WiFi on a VIA Rail train?

Yes VIA Rail offers WiFi connection onboard their train trips. Though most trips with VIA Rail will have WiFi as advertised, some trips might not come equipped with WiFi, and onboard WiFi can lose its connection in rural areas. We recommend you bring a book or download a film just to play it safe. VIA Rail WiFi is generally best used for surfing the web, checking emails and chatting with friends; you shouldn’t count on the WiFi to binge watch your favourite show.

How much luggage can you take on the VIA Rail train?

ViaRail has quite an extensive baggage policy intended to best service all passengers while maintaining standard regulation.

The carry on options stand as follows:

Option 1: 1 personal item + 1 article (40 lbs. Max)

Option 2: 1 personal item + 2 articles (25 lbs. each)

Please note: Overweight carry-ons will have a $20 fee added to them per leg of your trip for those choosing option #2.

Some trains do offer the option to take with you checked bags. For those trains, the policy for checked bag is as follows:

2 checked articles (50 lbs each Max.)

Should your train not have a checked baggage compartment, you will be unable to check a bag and will need to comply with the carry on bag policy.

Are there power points on a VIA Rail train? Are there USB points?

Yes, there are power points onboard VIA Rail train trips. You can generally find one or two sockets per row of seats, so be a good traveller and check if your seat neighbour might want to charge up their devices as well. With the onboard power points, you can charge both a computer and USB devices with a power point USB converter that typically comes with most phones and tablets. Since VIA Rail might sometimes use replacement train vehicles, not all trips are guaranteed to have power points. We recommend to bring a power bank to charge your phone for all trips over 2 hours, just in case.

More info about VIA Rail:

One of VIA Rail’s signature trips is The Canadian, which takes you from Toronto to Vancouver. This train is world-renowned and is even featured on the back of the Canadian ten dollar bill. During the ride aboard VIA Rail’s The Canadian, you will get a view of incredible scenery out the window, from the lakes of Ontario, to the prairies in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, to the boreal forests in Alberta, to the Canadian Rockies, with stops in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Jasper along the way. The Canadian train even has a dome car, made specifically to appreciate the incredible views aboard VIA Rail.

With service across to over 300 locations, VIA Rail provides the best, and most scenic, option of transportation for all passengers interested in traveling within Canada. Thanks to the expansive service provided by VIA Rail, you can board a train to almost any destination you wish to travel to and get there in comfort. VIA Rail reaches cities like Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto among others.

If you are looking to book low cost VIA Rail train tickets, Wanderu is your best source! We help you search across multiple days, times and routes to find the best VIA Rail options for your trip. Once you finish your purchase, sit back , relax and enjoy all the beautiful scenery that Canada has to offer from your seat on the train.

An amazing train ride offered by VIA Rail is The Ocean route from Montréal to Halifax. Enjoy the beauty of French Quebec before you head through the Maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. With VIA Rail tickets, you’ll be able to travel through Manitoba from Winnipeg in the south up north to Churchill, which is one of the best places in the world to see polar bears.

VIA Rail also offers convenient service in the corridor from Windsor to Québec City. VIA Rail trains running in the corridor connect the major cities of Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal, and many other towns in between.

VIA Rail passengers take over 3.5 million trips each year, and VIA Rail trains serve over 400 destinations. VIA Rail is a fantastic way to travel around Canada, whether for a quick and convenient commute from Toronto to Ottawa, or for an incredible adventure across the country from Halifax to Vancouver.

Does VIA Rail offer will call tickets, that you pick up at the station?

No, currently VIA Rail does not offer will call tickets. You should purchase your tickets online and make sure you have everything you need to board before you arrive at the station or stop.

Do you need an ID to get on a VIA Rail train?

Yes, VIA Rail requires you to present an ID to an agent to be allowed to board the train. Make sure you have identification issued by a government agency that meets the carrier’s requirements. Alternative IDs, like a university ID, won’t work.

Can you use your phone to board VIA Rail?

Yes, you can board VIA Rail by showing your E Ticket on your phone. The E Ticket is emailed to when you make your reservation. To save yourself the trouble of digging through your inbox to find your ticket, get the Wanderu app and pull up your ticket with one click.

Are there toilets on VIA Rail trains?

Yes, there are toilets on VIA Rail train trips. The cubicles are pretty basic and include a toilet, toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Most cubicles don’t have running water. As you will be using a toilet on a moving vehicle, please use caution and hold on to a rail at all times.

Are meals or drinks offered onboard VIA Rail trips?

VIA Rail provides snacks to satisfy your hunger during your travels. Check with the carrier if snacks are for sale, and pack a credit card and some cash in case you get hungry.

Do you have to print your VIA Rail ticket?

VIA Rail does not require a printed ticket to board the train. An E Ticket is sent to you by email that you can load on most electronic devices. You will want to have your ticket ready to be displayed as you board for the agent to scan. We recommend you download the Wanderu app, as it gives you super easy access to E Tickets for your upcoming trips for most carriers. As back up, road warriors recommend taking a screenshot of your E Ticket. That way, you won’t be fumbling around in case your internet connection cuts out.

Does VIA Rail offer any premium features like extra legroom, films, or TV?

VIA Rail goes the extra distance to deliver up-class offerings to its customers. Movies are provided during the train trip to keep you entertained. Don’t forget to bring your favorite pair of headphones, as not all carriers offer headphones on the train. We recommend in-ear noise cancelling headphones as the best choice for the frequent traveler due to their small size. Do you find yourself squished in a regular seat or just love having extra room to sprawl out? Well you’re in luck as VIA Rail advertises that they offer extra legroom seating. Since there is no standard of what extra legroom is, the extra space you might get varies from carrier to carrier, but getting extra is always good.
