About GW Bridge Bus Station in New York
The George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal (aka GWB Bus Terminal) is a bustling transportation hub located in the Washington Heights of Manhattan. Designed by renowned architect Pier Luigi Nervi, the terminal was built in 1963 and covers an area of approximately 120,000 square feet, with 223 bus gates, making it one of the largest bus terminals in the world.
The GWB Bus Terminal is connected to the George Washington Bridge, one of the busiest bridges in the world, and serves as a major gateway to New York City for commuters traveling from New Jersey and other nearby areas. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the station itself. It is home to many bus companies, including New Jersey Transit, Greyhound, and Peter Pan. It also provides connections to other forms of transportation, such as the New York City subway system, which can be accessed via the nearby 175th Street station on the A line.
While the terminal has faced criticism in the past for its outdated facilities and overcrowding, the Port Authority has taken proactive measures to address these issues by launching various improvement projects in recent years. Thanks to these initiatives, the terminal now boasts additional bus gates, improved lighting, and better ventilation, among other enhancements. As an extra bonus, a significant renovation project is underway, aimed at modernizing the terminal’s facilities and expanding its capacity. These upgrades enhance the terminal’s overall experience and ensure it remains a vital component of the region’s transportation infrastructure for years to come.
