Although Heidelberg does not have an airport, the Mannheim Airport is under 15km away, and it's easy to take a train from Mannheim to Heidelberg. Many direct trains run to Heidelberg from across Germany and other European cities, too, so there is no shortage of travel options to get to this fabulous city.

Situated halfway between Düsseldorf and the Dutch border in the west of Germany, Mönchengladbach is best known for its football team and the famous Borussia-Park stadium where the team plays. However, Mönchengladbach also has a diverse cultural heritage, a rich art scene, and many green spaces for entertaining any non-Bundesliga fans who visit.

Experience Mönchengladbach's artistic culture at the Abteiberg Museum. Filled with contemporary and modern art, the Abteiberg has become an icon due to its vast collection of enviable art, including works by Franz Marc, Man Ray, and Marcel Duchamp. A gorgeous sculpture garden also makes the museum worth a stop.

If you prefer something a bit more historical, head to the Schloss Rheydt. This stunning moated palace, rebuilt during the Renaissance with the arches and facades on view today, dates to the year 1060.
