About Amtrak Crescent

The Crescent is an Amtrak passenger train service that runs from New York to New Orleans by way of Atlanta. The name of the line is inspired by the fact that the full journey from the Big Apple to the Big Easy takes approximately 30 hours, which means passengers have to spend the night aboard the train.

Stretching 1,377 miles, the Crescent is one of the longest train routes in America. It also passes through more states than any other Amtrak train: 12 states to be exact, plus the District of Columbia. Other major cities among the Crescent's 33 stops include Baltimore, MD, Charlotte, NC, Philadelphia, PA and Birmingham, AL. Crescent trains operate under numbers 19 and 20 and offer coach, business, and sleeper classes.

Carrying more than 250,000 passengers per year, the Amtrak Crescent is primarily used for long-distance train travel between the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions of the United States. For shorter trips between the northern stops, travelers are encouraged to use regional trains such as the Amtrak Northeast Regional instead. Depending on whether you’re going on the full train journey from NYC to NOLA or hopping on for an intermediate route, the price of the train ticket for the Crescent will range from PLN 21.98 to PLN 1,223.58.

As an overnight train, the Crescent offers a variety of amenities and accommodation options. In addition to regular coach class seats, Crescent trains come equipped with roomette and bedroom cars. There’s also a café car where you can enjoy freshly prepared meals and a variety of soft and alcoholic beverages. Like all Amtrak trains, the Crescent offers free WiFi, power outlets and extra legroom.

An official Amtrak partner since 2015, Wanderu allows you to search and find all Crescent train schedules, and book a cheap train ticket that fits your needs. The best part – there are no extra fees for booking your train trip on Wanderu.

Amtrak Crescent Train Guide & FAQs

Do Amtrak Crescent trains have WiFi?

Yes, Amtrak Crescent offers WiFi on their trains. Although most trips with Amtrak Crescent will have WiFi as advertised, some trains might not come equipped with WiFi and onboard WiFi can lose its connection in rural areas. We recommend you bring a book or download a movie just to play it safe. Amtrak Crescent WiFi is generally best used for surfing the web, checking emails and chatting with friends; you shouldn’t count on the WiFi to binge watch your favorite show.

Are there power outlets or USB plugs on the train?

Yes, there are power outlets onboard Amtrak Crescent trains. You can generally find one or two sockets per row of seats, so be a good traveller and check if your seat neighbor might want to charge up their devices as well. With the onboard power outlets, you can charge both a computer and USB devices with a USB power adapter that typically comes with most phones and tablets.

Since Amtrak Crescent might sometimes use replacement train vehicles, not all trips are guaranteed to have power points. We recommend to bring a power bank to charge your phone for all trips over 2 hours, just in case.

What is Amtrak Crescent's schedule?

On a typical day, Amtrak Crescent has 341 scheduled train trips in total. However, the exact departure and arrival times vary depending on the day and route. The best way to find the exact schedule for your trip is to use the search tool on this page.

Can you pick up will call tickets at the station?

No, Amtrak Crescent does not offer will call tickets. You should purchase your tickets online and make sure you have everything you need to board before you arrive at the station.

Do you need an ID to get on the train?

Yes, Amtrak Crescent requires you to present an ID to an agent to be allowed to board the train. Make sure you have identification issued by a government agency that meets the carrier’s requirements. Alternative IDs, such as a college ID, won’t work.

Are there bathrooms on Amtrak Crescent trains?

Yes, there are bathrooms on Amtrak Crescent trains. The bathrooms are pretty basic and include a toilet, toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Most bathrooms don’t have running water. As you will be using a bathroom on a moving vehicle, please use caution and hold on to a rail at all times.

Are meals or beverages available?

Amtrak Crescent provides snacks to satisfy your hunger during your travels. Be sure to pack a credit card and some cash in case you get hungry.

Do you have to print your Amtrak Crescent ticket?

Amtrak Crescent does not require a printed ticket to board the train. Instead, an eTicket is sent to you by email when you make your reservation. You can use your smartphone to show this eTicket to the ticketing agent as you board.

Does Amtrak Crescent offer any premium features like extra legroom or movies?

Amtrak Crescent goes the extra distance to deliver premium features to its customers.

Do you find yourself squished in a regular seat or just love having extra room to sprawl out? Well you’re in luck as Amtrak Crescent offers extra legroom seating. Since there is no standard of what extra legroom is, the extra space you get may vary between train lines, but getting extra is always good.
