About Amtrak Cascades

The Amtrak Cascades is a passenger train service operated by Amtrak that serves the Pacific Northwest. The train line runs between Vancouver, BC and Eugene, OR, connecting a total of 18 cities, including Seattle and Portland.

Railroads have offered train service between Portland and Seattle since 1925, and Amtrak took over passenger rail operations of the route in 1971. Amtrak is the largest passenger train service in America, and after adding the Portland to Seattle service to its national railway network, the train carrier expanded the line north into British Columbia and further south into Oregon. In 1999, the service was renamed the Cascades after the majestic Cascade mountain range that the route parallels, with individual trains named after mountain peaks in the Northwest like Mount Rainier and Mount Hood. Although Amtrak’s Coast Starlight also offers train service from Seattle to Eugene, the Cascades is the only Amtrak train which travels into Vancouver, BC.

The Cascades runs 350 daily trips and, depending on your route and when you book your ticket, you can expect to pay between SEK 29.73 and SEK 2,051.53. While on board, you can enjoy free WiFi, power sockets, reclining seats, and you’ll be able to purchase snacks and refreshments, including regional coffee, microbrews, and wines, from Amtrak’s Café Service. The Cascades is known as one of Amtrak's most scenic train routes, so don't miss the views of the Columbia River Gorge and other spectacular natural landscapes, best experienced from the Lounge Car.

Amtrak is an official Wanderu partner, which means you can search and book the cheapest available Amtrak Cascades tickets for your travels right here. Don't forget to enter your Amtrak Guest Rewards number at check-out so you can earn points to help you travel on this gorgeous line again and again.

  • Janie4 October 2026Portland – Seattle

Pros The experience to see other areas comfortably. The time wasvery close to driving in good traffic. Being able to leave the driving to Amtrack was great. The recaps in Portland and Seattle were very helpful Cons The seats were worn but not uncomfortable. It would be nice for those needing recap service to be boarded first since we take more time. Tips Always look for the signs before asking questions but if you have to Amtrack personnel are very helpful.

We recommend you bring a book or download a film just to play it safe. Amtrak Cascades WiFi is generally best used for surfing the web, checking emails and chatting with friends; you shouldn’t count on the WiFi to binge-watch your favourite show.
