Pros: Taking the train to Chicago from Kansas City is the very best way to get to the Windy City! The train leaves Union Station at 7:30 am and arrives around 2:30 pm in Chicago, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing and dinner. Seats are nice and wide with lots of legroom. We appreciate the footrest and the leg recliner. We pack a picnic for both ways, so I have no comments on the dining car. Cons: Sometimes there is too much chatter from the conductors. For those trying to nap it can be annoying. Bathrooms could use a bit more care, especially when the train is crowded. Tips: Download your favorite books and movies. Consider packing snacks to nibble along the way. Then sit back and enjoy the ride!More

On train staff were very nice. Seats recliner far back and there was plenty of leg room. Important to note: this applies to trains used for the Southwest Chief ONLY. It is a long haul train designed for comfort in both Coach and Business. Cons: Enough announcements already. Every 30 minutes or less an announcement promoting the dining car. The cost for food onboard is ridiculous. Bring snacks with you! Tips: Bring snacks because food prices onboard are astronomical and truly gouge you.More

Pros: The price was really great for a trip that was last minute and days before. Cons: This is on Amtrak's part, but I would appreciate better time openings for traveling. Tips: Bring a sweater, it was a bit cold on the train, even it being summer. Pros: The price was really great for a trip that was last minute and days before. Cons: Bathroom cleanliness, on-time arrival (2.5 hours late, and staff did not keep us well-informed in transit-until we were approaching arrival time- of just how late it would be), fathers day special did not work online for me (another passenger told me she got it, though), so had to pay full price, wifi worked intermittently and the staff person I spoke to about it was not even aware that there was wifi onboard ever.More
