About Amtrak Vermonter
The Vermonter is an Amtrak passenger train that connects St. Albans, VT to Washington, D.C. by way of New York City, with stops in a total of 30 cities. The train line provides easy access to several towns across Vermont where visitors can go skiing or snowboarding at world-famous winter resorts like Killington and Sugarbush, or simply enjoy the fresh air and unique nature of the Green Mountain National Forest.
The Vermonter has been in operation since 1995 when it replaced Amtrak’s Montrealer line. On average, the service carries about 100,000 passengers per year. Depending on your departure city and destination, the price of a one-way train ticket for Amtrak’s Vermonter line can vary from SEK 58.94 to SEK 4,135.79.
Vermonter trains pass through several towns in western Massachusetts, as well as major cities like Philadelphia and Baltimore. On average, the full train journey from northern Vermont to the nation's capital takes a little under 13 hours, and is renowned for the unique scenic views that the train presents as it passes through the Green Mountains and the Berkshires. In New York or D.C., you can transfer onto several other Amtrak lines that travel inland or further down the East Coast, including the Capitol Limited, the Pennsylvanian, or the Cardinal.
Aboard the Vermonter, passengers can enjoy free WiFi, power outlets at every seat and extra legroom. In each car, there are also several four-seat areas with tables in the middle where you can face and interact with other travelers. You can also grab a bite to eat or enjoy a refreshing beverage from the train’s café.
Amtrak has been an official Wanderu partner since 2015. Thanks to that, you can find and compare all Vermonter train schedules, and book cheap train tickets with ease on Wanderu.

Amtrak Vermonter passenger reviews
Pros I was very pleased with my trip. Cons Letting us know why we were running behind.
Pros Punctual & arrived at our destination on time 😁 Cons Nothing
Pros Quick. No fuss , no traffic
Pros First time Amtrak Hartford to Penn Station, surprised at how fast it was
Pros On time, comfortable, wifi. Cons Restroom dirty. Tips Better than travel by plane.
Cons Getting on and off was hard (I'm 75) but the conductor was helpful.
Pros Direct service from hometown to destination.
Pros On time! Cons It was fine. Tips Pay attention to boarding gates!
Pros Train travel Seeing Vermont from a different perspective Cons Add a bit more heat to the forward cars. But Tips Bring a warm scarf/sweater for your shoulders.
Pros I liked the view through the window, the outlets near the seat and the seat themselves weren't bad however I was anticipating them to be slightly more spacious. Cons I think just the size of the seat was a little small, with the tray down it felt like there was no room at all.
Pros Everything went smoothly, despite it being one of the coldest days of the year. Cons It may have been beyond Amtrak's control, but the car never finally felt warm. My assumption was that the temperature outside was too low for the interior heaters to overcome. I kept my overcoat, hat and gloves on throughout, which was adequate to keep me more or less confortable.
Pros Quick and easy commute Cons Cleaner bathrooms Tips Arrive 20min before boarding
Pros Very comfortable driver was very nice Cons Nothing Tips Always book with you guys
Pros The area was nice and clean, the quiet coach lived up to its standard! So nice to have bathrooms, wifi, and outlets! The seats even lean back more than a plane’s! Cons The bathroom trash could be emptied a little bit more frequently and the announcements about the cafe hours could be made more clear! Tips Sit back and relax! It’s an easy and enjoyable ride!
Pros Very friendly staff, smooth ride, comfy seat, and great access to food and drink. Cons It was advertised that there would be Wifi, but it did not work for the entirety of my trip, which was very disappointing.
Pros Conductor was super nice and the train was prompt and comfy. Great deal Cons One of the bathrooms could be cleaner
Cons Foot rest would be good
Cons There were three in our party, and even though there was a few seats together that was marked as 'for 3 and more', a single young woman sat in it alone, and put her purse and water bottle there. The Amtrak employee did not say anything to her about it, even though my family ended up not sitting together.
Pros The African American History Museum Cons Should've went to the pool Tips No
Pros It departed on time! Cons The opening of the doors is not automatic! Tips Be patient.
