About Amtrak Keystone Service

The Keystone Service is Amtrak’s daily train service that travels between New York and Harrisburg, PA. As the name suggests, this is the primary train route that serves the state of Pennsylvania and connects it to New York City, as well as several cities across New Jersey. On a regular one-way trip, the train covers around 195 miles and passes through 19 cities, including Newark, Lancaster and Philadelphia. Depending on the departure point and destination, ticket prices for the Keystone Service vary from SEK 58.94 to SEK 2,043.33.

The Keystone Service started running in 1972. Since then, it has become Amtrak’s fifth-busiest route, transporting over 1.4 million passengers per year. The route is also famous for its high-speed rail portions that allow the train to reach a maximum speed of 125 mph.

    Pros At the train station in NY the guy was very nice who helped me take my luggage on the train and seating me in a great location. I tipped him well and he even said he didn’t expect it. He was great. Cons The lady checking your tickets and walking thru the cars was so rude. I sat near a couple that was supposed to get off at Exton. They had taken their luggage down and were ready to get off and the train pulled away. It was one minute. The lady came and she told them. She said she thought everyone was off. It was one minute. She was so rude. Wi-Fi only worked after I asked. After each stop it stopped working. Tips Get your luggage ready so you can actually get off.

Amtrak Keystone Service Cancellation Policy

All Amtrak Keystone Service tickets can be cancelled for a full refund within the first 24 hours after purchase. If more than 24 hours have passed, the cancellation policy and change fee structure for Amtrak bookings depend on the type of fare you purchased:

Saver Fare tickets: A 25% fee applies for any changes. If you cancel the trip, you will receive an eVoucher worth 75% of the original ticket price.

Value Fare tickets: No change fees and fully refundable up to 15 or more days before departure. If cancelled less than 14 days before departure, a 25% cancellation fee applies.

Flexible, Business and Premium Fare tickets: No change fees and fully refundable if cancelled or changed before departure.

Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable after the train has departed, so be sure to make your updates as soon as possible if your travel plans change.

If your Amtrak Keystone Service ticket is eligible for change or cancellation, you can do that by calling Amtrak’s customer service phone number at 1 (800) 872-7245. To cancel or change your booking online, simply go to www.amtrak.com and click on the “Modify Trip” tab in the upper right corner.

Carry-On Baggage

  • One (1) personal item – max. weight: 25 lbs (12 kg), max. dimensions: 14 x 11 x 7 in (35 x 28 x 18 cm)

  • Two (2) carry-on items – max. weight: 50 lbs (23 kg), max. dimensions: 28 x 22 x 14 in (71 x 56 x 35 cm)

Additional Carry-On Rules:

  • Strollers and car seats do not count toward the carry-on limit.

  • Overweight bags must be repacked so they are under 50 lbs. Boxes may be purchased at staffed stations to aid in repacking.

  • A $20 excess baggage fee will be charged for each carry-on and personal item above the quantity and size limits. A maximum of two excess bags are permitted per passenger.

Checked Baggage

  • Two (2) items for free – max. weight: 50 lbs (23 kg), max. dimensions: 75 in / 191 cm (length + width + height)

  • Up to two (2) additional items: $20 fee per item

  • Oversized baggage (76-100 inches total): $20 fee per item

Not all Amtrak Keystone Service routes offer checked baggage service. Check ahead before traveling.

  • Your luggage should be checked at least 45 minutes before the train departs.

  • ID tags are required for all luggage.

  • All luggage must be in containers that are suitable for transport (storage tubs and plastic bags are not allowed).

  • Bicycles up to 50 lbs (23 kg) may be checked for $20.

  • Folding bikes (max 34 x 15.5 x 48 inches / 86 x 39 x 122 cm) can be carried on board for free.

  • Skis & snowboards count as checked baggage if under 50 lbs (23 kg) and 75 linear inches (191 cm).

  • Wheelchairs, walkers, and CPAP machines can be brought onboard for free.
