Heidelberg is also home to the famous hike, Philosopher's Way. Taking its name from the many university academics that used to hike this route for the solitude and views to inspire them, this route rambles up the southern side of the Heiligenberg. With exotic vegetation and a temperate climate during the summer months, it's easy to think that you've accidentally walked all the way to the Mediterranean.
Although Heidelberg does not have an airport, the Mannheim Airport is under 15km away, and it's easy to take a train from Mannheim to Heidelberg. Kehl
Kehl is a town in the southwestern region of Germany, on the banks of the river Rhine. This scenic town is a gateway to the larger city of Strasbourg, France, on the opposite bank of the river. Several bridges connect the two cities, but the Passerelle des Deux Rives is the one to cross if you can. This pedestrian-only bridge starts in the beautiful Rhine Promenade in Kehl, connecting to another park in Strasbourg. While the bridge offers nice river views, the Weißtannenturm Kehl is an observation tower that offers panoramic views of the entire town.
Kehl is a small town, but its location near the border between France and Germany means it offers a great mix of traditional German and French cuisine. The most notable eateries in the city are Alte Zunft Kehl and Zur Traube.
