Amtrak Thruway, also known as Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach, is a system of intercity passenger buses operated by Amtrak to connect train stations to areas that are not served by the carrier’s railroads. The service is also sometimes used to transfer passengers from one train line to another, or as a temporary replacement during track maintenance and train service disruptions.

Unlike all other Amtrak services, Thruway is not concentrated within a specific route or region. It is available wherever necessary across all of the contiguous United States, as well as certain parts of Canada, connecting a total of 262 locations. While most trips are served by modern coaches, some Amtrak Thruway trips may be conducted by a ferry or a van, depending on the route or number of passengers.

Pros: The driver drove very safely. I was relaxed the entire trip. The passengers were quiet. The bus was very clean. Cons: I wish the seats had more room, that they were wider. I'm 5'5'" and weigh 145 and my seat felt too narrow. I couldn't imagine heavier person being comfortable. Tips: Show up early, bus leaves on time.

Pros: I like the fact that I could easily get another ticket, since I insured it when I got it. I did feel that it was longer getting back then it was coming. Cons: Maybe the time that it takes to make the trip. Tips: Make sure you don't forget anything, because you can easily get thrown off, but definitely insure your ticket so you have some piece of mind.

Pros: It was comfortable and the seat is nice. I’m glad there was a bathroom in the back and it was a good trip. Cons: The bus driver was very, very friendly and he was a good driver to you.

Amtrak Thruway Cancellation Policy

All Amtrak tickets can be cancelled for a full refund within the first 24 hours after purchase. If more than 24 hours have passed, the cancellation policy and change fee structure for Amtrak bookings depend on the type of fare you purchased:

Saver Fare tickets: A 25% fee applies for any changes. If you cancel the trip, you will receive an eVoucher worth 75% of the original ticket price.

Value Fare tickets: No change fees and fully refundable up to 15 or more days before departure. If cancelled less than 14 days before departure, a 25% cancellation fee applies.

Flexible, Business and Premium Fare tickets: No change fees and fully refundable if cancelled or changed before departure.

Sometimes, Amtrak Thruway trips may be operated by a different bus carrier, such as Greyhound. In those cases, Amtrak Thruway tickets still follow Amtrak’s cancellation policy.

Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable after the bus has departed, so be sure to make your updates as soon as possible if your travel plans change.
