Pros
There was plenty of leg room, so stretching out for a nap was super comfortable!
Cons
Departing on time. I had an hour and ten minutes between my two trains at Chicago Union Station and I barely made my second train. If there was an issue departing, it would nice to have an accurate time stamp of how late we were going to be.

Pros
Taking the train to Chicago from Kansas City is the very best way to get to the Windy City! The train leaves Union Station at 7:30 am and arrives around 2:30 pm in Chicago, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing and dinner. Seats are nice and wide with lots of legroom....More
Cons
Sometimes there is too much chatter from the conductors. For those trying to nap it can be annoying. Bathrooms could use a bit more care, especially when the train is crowded.
Tips
Download your favorite books and movies. Consider packing snacks to nibble along the way. Then sit back and enjoy the ride!

Enough announcements already. Every 30 minutes or less an announcement promoting the dining car. The cost for food onboard is ridiculous. Bring snacks with you!
Tips
Bring snacks because food prices onboard are astronomical and truly gouge you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there WiFi onboard Amtrak Southwest Chief?

No, Amtrak Southwest Chief does not offer WiFi at this time. We find that a good book makes the time fly by and streaming services like Netflix allow you download TV shows and movies that you can then watch during your trip. Plan ahead and you will stay entertained during the entire train ride.

Are there power outlets on a Amtrak Southwest Chief train? Are there USB plugs?

Yes, there are power outlets onboard Amtrak Southwest Chief train trips. You can generally find one or two plugs per row of seats, so be a good traveler and check if your seat neighbor might want to charge up their devices as well. With the onboard power outlets, you can charge both a computer and USB devices with a power outlet USB converter that typically come with most phones and tablets. Since Amtrak Southwest Chief might sometimes use replacement train vehicles, not all trips are guaranteed to have power outlets. We recommend to bring a power bank to charge your phone for all trips over 2 hours, just in case.

Does Amtrak Southwest Chief offer will call tickets, that you pick up at the station?

No, currently Amtrak Southwest Chief does not offer will call tickets. You should purchase your tickets online and make sure you have everything you need to board before you arrive at the station or stop.

Do you need an ID to get on a Amtrak Southwest Chief train?

Yes, Amtrak Southwest Chief requires you to present an ID to an agent to be allowed to board the train. Make sure you have identification issued by a government agency that meets the carrier’s requirements. Alternative IDs, like a college ID, won’t work.

Can you use your phone to board Amtrak Southwest Chief?

Yes, you can board Amtrak Southwest Chief by showing your E Ticket on your phone. The E Ticket is emailed to when you make your reservation. To save yourself the trouble of digging through your inbox to find your ticket, get the Wanderu app and pull up your ticket with one click.

Are there bathrooms on Amtrak Southwest Chief trains?

Yes, there are bathrooms on Amtrak Southwest Chief train trips. The bathrooms are pretty basic and include a toilet, toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Most bathrooms don’t have running water. As you will be using a bathroom on a moving vehicle, please use caution and hold on to a rail at all times.

Are meals or beverages offered onboard Amtrak Southwest Chief trips?

Amtrak Southwest Chief provides snacks to satisfy your hunger during your travels. Check with the carrier if snacks are for sale, and pack a credit card and some cash in case you get hungry.

Do you have to print your Amtrak Southwest Chief ticket?

Amtrak Southwest Chief does not require a printed ticket to board the train. An E Ticket is sent to you by email that you can load on most electronic devices. You will want to have your ticket ready to be displayed as you board for the agent to scan. We recommend you download the Wanderu app, as it gives you super easy access to E Tickets for your upcoming trips for most carriers. As back up, road warriors recommend taking a screenshot of your E Ticket. That way, you won’t be fumbling around in case your internet connection cuts out.

Does Amtrak Southwest Chief offer any premium features like extra legroom, movies or TV?

Amtrak Southwest Chief goes the extra distance to deliver up-class offerings to its customers. Do you find yourself squished in a regular seat or just love having extra room to sprawl out? Well you’re in luck as Amtrak Southwest Chief advertises that they offer extra legroom seating. Since there is no standard of what extra legroom is, the extra space you might get varies from carrier to carrier, but getting extra is always good.
