First opened in 1927, the station underwent several redevelopment and renovation projects to reach its current state. In 1999, in recognition of the station's importance to transportation history, it was inducted into the North America Railway Hall of Fame. The current station is served by VIA Rail trains and local public transit. The station currently serves over 72 million commuters each year, and as much as 91% of all Toronto passengers pass through this station. The Edmonton VIA Rail Station is the center of intercity rail travel in Edmonton. Located 5.5 kilometers northwest of downtown Edmonton, the station first opened in 1998. Due to its unique location, trains have to reverse into or out of the station. It is served by only one VIA Rail line: the Canadian line, which runs across the entire country, from Toronto to Vancouver. The nearest hotels are available just one kilometer away from the station.
