Frequent questions about traveling by train from New York to Washington DC.

How does the train from New York to Washington, D.C., compare to driving or flying?

Taking Amtrak from New York City to D.C. is faster than driving: The train takes an average of 3 to 3.5 hours, whereas driving takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes. If there is bad traffic on I-95 South, the train is an even more efficient option.

The average flight time from New York City to D.C. is 1 hour and 25 minutes, making it a faster but typically more expensive option than the train. However, most airlines recommend that you arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes prior to departure, while Amtrak recommends arriving just 30 minutes in advance.

How hard is it to get to the train station versus the airport?

In New York City your train will depart from Pennsylvania Station, situated in Midtown Manhattan. You can ride to Penn Station via the MTA Subway on the 1, 2, 3, A, C or E lines, getting off at the Penn Station stop. Many local bus lines also drop off at Penn Station.

Alternatively, getting to any of New York’s nearby airports from Manhattan is inconvenient. Newark and John F. Kennedy are each about a 16-mile drive from Midtown, and while LaGuardia is closer, it’s still 9 miles away. Taking public transit to the airports is a hike as well: You’re looking at more than an hour’s ride to JFK, 45 minutes to LaGuardia or 40 minutes to Newark, all with your bags in tow.

The train station in Washington, D.C., is also more centrally located than the airport. Union Station is near the heart of the city, less than a mile from the United States Capitol building. From Union Station, board the Red Line of the Washington Metro at the Union Station stop to travel toward downtown, the National Mall or elsewhere. You can also take the DC Streetcar, or ride one of many bus lines. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan Airport lies in Arlington, Virginia, located across the Potomac River and a full four miles from downtown.

What is the busiest time to travel by train from Washington to New York?

The busiest time of the week for travel from New York to Washington by train is at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. When planning to travel around this time, tickets should be booked well in advance as they may sell out.

Around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday is when the fewest number of train tickets are sold. If you’re looking for a little extra space, the train departing at this time is the least likely to be crowded.
