About Port Authority Bus Terminal

Port Authority Bus Terminal is one of the world’s busiest bus stations, serving thousands of buses in and out of New York City per day. Its location in Midtown Manhattan means the station is also sometimes called Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal.

Consisting of a north and south wing, Port Authority Bus Terminal occupies an entire city block. However, it can be easy to miss amidst the surrounding Times Square jumbo screens. Port Authority has bus gates on several stories both below and above ground, plus retail services and fast food spots. Most intercity buses depart from lower level platforms.

Port Authority Bus Terminal welcomes close to a quarter of a million passengers daily on local transit and intercity bus services. Bus companies including Adirondack Trailways, Greyhound, and Peter Pan Bus Lines run routes from Port Authority to destinations across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The intercity bus terminal is connected to the Times Square and 42nd St Port Authority Bus Terminal subway station complex. Many lines on the New York City subway system operate through this station, so Port Authority is well-connected to the rest of the city.

Port Authority Bus Station is centrally-located in New York City, between 40th and 42nd Streets at 625 8th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Port Authority is located one block west of Times Square, and one block east of the Lincoln Tunnel, which connects New York with New Jersey. Some of the Manhattan neighborhoods that surround Port Authority include the Theater District, the Garment District, Hell’s Kitchen, and Hudson Yards.

There are multiple entrances to NYC’s Port Authority Bus Terminal, including on 8th Avenue and W 42nd Street.

It’s easy to get to Port Authority Bus Terminal from anywhere in New York City, as it’s one of the city’s primary transit hubs. The bus terminal is only a five-minute walk from Times Square and the area’s world-famous attractions. Underground passages directly link the bus terminal with the MTA’s Times Square-42nd Street Station, where subway trains run on lines 1, 2, 3, 7, A, C, E, N, Q, S, R, and W with service throughout the five boroughs.

Other local transit, including New York City Bus, jitney buses to New Jersey, and NJ Transit, operate routes to Port Authority Bus Terminal, as well.

There is a cab stand immediately outside Port Authority Bus Terminal by the 8th Avenue entrance. There is usually a line of taxis waiting at this stand, or you can hail a cab from the sidewalk outside the entrance.

Uber or Lyft rides to Port Authority Bus Terminal generally pick up passengers on 40th St, 41st St, 42nd St, or 9th Ave outside of the station. You can specify your preferred pick-up spot via each rideshare app when you request a ride.

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are commonly-used to get around New York City. Depending on the time of day, it will cost about $20 to travel from Port Authority Bus Terminal to Central Park, and roughly $25 to the World Trade Center.

Port Authority Bus Terminal is just over 15 miles away from JFK Airport. The journey takes a minimum of 30 minutes by car, but can last up to an hour with traffic. Keep in mind that taxi and rideshare rates do go up during peak travel times.

Alternatively, you can take public transport from Port Authority Bus Terminal to JFK Airport. From the bus terminal, take the E line to Jamaica Station and transfer to the AirTrain to JFK.

Penn Station is only a half mile from Port Authority Bus Terminal. It takes just ten minutes walking south along 8th Avenue to reach Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, where Amtrak and LIRR services depart.

If you prefer not to walk, taxis and rideshares can travel from Port Authority to Penn Station in about five minutes, or you can take the A, C, or E subway lines 3 minutes to 34 St - Penn Station.

There is a parking garage on top of Port Authority Bus Terminal operated by LAZ Parking. There are 1,250 parking spots, and parking costs from $30 for 2 hours. The garage is open 24/7, and you have the option to pay in advance or purchase parking upon arrival.

Port Authority Bus Terminal has WiFi in all passenger areas including its gates. WiFi at Port Authority is free for the first 30 minutes (with the option to pay for more time) and provides generally reliable connection throughout the terminal.

There are no official luggage lockers or storage facilities at Port Authority Bus Terminal due to security concerns. Several luggage storage search apps provide options to leave your bags at locations nearby.

Accessibility

Port Authority Bus Terminal provides elevators and step-free access to all floors. Its restrooms, restaurants, and most bus gates are wheelchair-accessible. However, gates 50-56 and 200-234 are not. Free assistance can be requested at Information Booths.

Restrooms

Restrooms at Port Authority Bus Terminal are free to use. They can be found on all levels, but the restrooms on the second floor have been most recently-renovated and are considered the cleanest. This also makes them the busiest, but the flattering lighting might be worth it!

Convenience Stores

There are a number of convenience stores throughout Port Authority Bus Terminal, as well as a Duane Reade pharmacy. Several Hudson News locations sell newspapers, snacks, and travel essentials. There’s also a post office and multiple ATMs within the station.

Bus & Train Carriers at Port Authority Bus Terminal

The biggest intercity bus companies at Port Authority Bus Terminal are Greyhound, New York Trailways, Peter Pan, Megabus, OurBus, and Martz Trailways. These carriers provide transportation from New York City to other cities throughout the Northeast and beyond.

The station is an important stop on many local routes operated on behalf of the New York and New Jersey transit authorities. These include the Broadway Line (M104) and Ninth Avenue Line (M11); both stop on the street outside the terminal.

Descend to the terminal’s subway level for subway services on lines A, C, E, N, Q, S, R, W, 1, 2, 3, and 7. Grand Central Station can be reached by taking a Line 7 train two stops, and Penn Station via Lines A, C, or E just one stop.

  • Port Authority Bus Terminal is Greyhound’s primary New York bus station. Greyhound destinations include Boston, Atlantic City, and Washington DC, as well as Montreal and Toronto across the border in Canada.

    You can check screens around the terminal for departure gates if they are not listed on your ticket. Most Greyhound services use the gates on the lower level of Port Authority Bus Station. There’s also a Greyhound ticket booth in the terminal, if you need to speak with an agent to make changes to your trip.

  • Trailways operates several major routes to and from Midtown Manhattan’s Port Authority Bus Terminal. These include its popular route between New York and Buffalo, plus many additional routes to upstate New York.

    You can find New York Trailways staff at the Trailways counter in the main ticketing plaza of Port Authority Bus Terminal. Its buses usually depart from gates 1-85 on the lower level.

  • Port Authority Bus Terminal is one of Peter Pan Bus Lines’ primary travel hubs. Its buses depart from the terminal’s North Wing.

    Peter Pan service to Boston and Springfield usually departs from Gate 69. Routes to Providence, Cape Cod, and the Berkshires operate through gate 70. Gate 74 usually serves routes to Baltimore and Washington DC, while gate 75 welcomes the Philadelphia Express. However, you should always double check your bus’ assigned gate when you get to the station.

  • Megabus operates some of its services out of Port Authority Bus Terminal, while others depart from a street-side stop nearby on 34th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues (opposite the Javits Center). Be sure to confirm your departure point before arrival.

    Megabus intercity services that use Port Authority Bus Terminal generally depart from the lower level. Take the escalator or elevator from street level to reach these gates.
