New Haven to Essex train

Sitting on the mouth of the Quinnipiac River of Connecticut, New Haven has been the home of the esteemed Yale University for more than 300 years. The quaint college town, with its cultural significance, has long been a highly-rated destination for culturally-inclined travelers. The first thing to do in New Haven is to visit the Yale campus, which was designed by famous architects such as Eero Saarinen and Frank O. Gehry. Don’t forget to check out the university’s visitor center as well, which houses impressive historical displays. Other interesting destinations on the premises are the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. If you wish to take a break from the urban environment and go hunting for some amazing nature shots, East Rock Park will be a premier choice. Inside the park is the Pardee Rose Garden, which features more than 50 varieties of roses blooming in June and July.

New Haven is a popular destination for foodies, and its greatest offering is pizza. New Haven’s special pizza, also known as “apizza,” is a must-try when you are in town, and the best place to try this delicacy is at Pepe’s, its birthplace. Another establishment to check out is Louis’ Lunch, which has been serving delightful fast food since 1895.

The central hub of transportation in the city is Union Station, where travelers can catch Amtrak trains or buses by Greyhound and Flixbus for intercity transits. Air services are handled by the Tweed New Haven Regional Airport, located 3 miles east of the business district.

Essex is a town in northeast Vermont adjacent to Burlington. The legal breakdown of cities, towns, and villages gets a bit complicated here, because the village of Essex Junction used to be within the town of Essex. However, in 2022, the village separated from the town and became the city of Essex Junction. Don't worry, locals (probably) won't quiz you on that. Essex Junction is functionally the downtown area of Essex, so you'll likely be spending most of your time in the local cafés and shops in Essex Junction.

Essex is a fantastic place for nature lovers and outdoorsy people, due to mountain biking trails on Saxon Hill and idyllic fishing on Colchester Pond. Many of Essex's parks have pools and ponds, too. Aside from the impressive parks, trails, and natural areas, you can also check out the Vermont National Guard Library & Museum and Fort Ethan Allen Museum for some local history.

Essex is known for having a vibrant scene for foodies, and beer lovers frequent the many brewing companies and brewpubs. Go all out with the cooking classes and incredible restaurants at the Essex Resort and Spa, set against the idyllic Green Mountains.

The Essex Amtrak station is one of the last stops on the Amtrak Vermonter route from Washington, D.C. Taking the train to Essex is a breeze whether you're traveling from Baltimore, Philadelphia, or New York. Essex Junction is located within five miles of the Burlington International Airport and shares VTrans local transportation with the rest of Vermont. Green Mountain Transit also provides transportation services to Essex.
