About Union Station in New Haven
Union Station is a historic transportation hub located in downtown New Haven, Connecticut. Designed by architects Warren and Wetmore, who also created Grand Central Terminal in New York City, this Beaux-Arts style station first opened in 1920. With its ornate detailing, classical columns, and impressive central dome, it is a beautiful example of early 20th-century architecture.
As one of the busiest train stations in the US, Union Station is a major transportation hub for Amtrak, commuter rail, and bus services. The station connects Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. through frequent Amtrak and commuter rail service. Additionally, regional and local bus services, including Greyhound, Peter Pan, and Connecticut Transit, are available at the station.
But Union Station isn’t just a transportation hub, it’s also a shopping and dining destination. You can enjoy a cup of coffee at Starbucks, grab a sandwich at Subway, or indulge in a donut at Dunkin Donuts. And if you’re interested in the history of rail transportation, you won’t want to miss the New Haven Railroad Historical and Technical Association’s Railroad Museum, which features exhibits on the area’s rail history.
Over the years, New Haven Union Station has undergone several renovations to modernize its facilities and improve accessibility for passengers. The most recent $31 million renovation, completed in 2002, restored the station’s historic features, added new retail and food options, and installed new elevators and escalators.
