Where should you stay in Providence?

Where you should stay in Providence depends on where the bus drops you off.

A number of different buses drop passengers off in Downtown Providence, near Kennedy Plaza. Downtown is a lively place to stay with good food and nightlife. Just across the Providence River is College Hill, where you can find some budget-friendly accomodations by Brown University. On the other side of Downtown is Federal Hill, a centrally located neighborhood known for its rich Italian history (read: good Italian food).

If you get dropped off at the Peter Pan Bus Terminal just north of the North Burial Ground, there are tons of cute, very affordable homeshare options in the Mt. Hope neighborhood. Because you’re a bit outside of the city, things will be a little more quiet, and you’re still in walking distance of College Hill and Brown University.

How do you get around Providence?

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) provides low-cost bus fares to multiple locations from downtown bus drop-off locations, as well as from the Peter Pan Bus Terminal. (From the Bus Terminal, the 49 bus can get you to Brown University in about 11 minutes.) You can purchase an all-day bus pass for just $6, or a one-way ticket for $2.

You’ll find RIPTA services the greater Providence area as well, with easy options to get to the Roger Williams Park Zoo, restaurants in Federal Hill, and shopping destinations on Thayer Street. RIPTA also provides a downtown trolley service that runs year-round.

What are some places to visit in Providence?

The most obvious destination in Providence is Brown University, an Ivy League institution in the College Hill Historical District that was founded in 1764. The campus itself is lush and beautiful, and the greater neighborhood is dense with Colonial-era buildings. The area’s architecture is well worth a visit.

A terrific family-friendly place to visit in Providence is the Roger Williams Park Zoo. This zoo was founded in 1872, and contains more than 160 animal species. Adult admission costs $14.95, and child tickets (for ages 2-12) cost $9.95.

If you’re a music fan, The Strand Ballroom in Downtown Providence is a beautifully restored theater where you can see many top touring acts. It’s centrally located on Washington Street, near a lot of great dining options.

What are some good restaurants in Providence?

Near bus drop-off points in Downtown Providence, you can chow down at Haven Brothers Diner, or stop in at Figidini for wood-fired Neapolitan pizza. Thayer Street in College Hill has a ton of hot dining options, from vegan By Chloe to the straightforward Kabob and Curry. Up in Mt. Hope near the Peter Pan Bus Stop, you can find Providence Bagel, arguably the best spot to score a bagel and schmear in the city.

For finer dining, as we mentioned previously, Federal Hill is an excellent area to find some delicious Italian food. One of the most highly respected venues there is Andino’s Italian Restaurant, which opened in 1975 and continues to serve up world-class dishes. The vibe is very 1940s, and the lobster ravioli is so very New England.

If you are looking for something less expensive, Harry’s Bar & Burger near the Old State House is more reasonably priced. The restaurant is known for their burgers (as the name suggests), but they also have a wide selection of craft brews.

What is the best time to visit Providence by bus?

The best time to visit Providence is from June to November. While bus tickets may cost a bit more in the busy summer season, the comfortable temperatures make it worth it. Crowds peter off a bit in the autumn, offering better prices and the bonus of beautiful New England foliage.
