About Amtrak City of New Orleans

The City of New Orleans is a passenger train service operated by Amtrak that connects Chicago with New Orleans, by way of Memphis. As the average one-way start-to-end journey takes about 19 hours and 30 minutes, there is only one trip per day in either direction. Along the way, the train stops at 17 cities, including Champaign, IL, Fulton, KY, and Jackson, MS. In New Orleans, you can transfer to Amtrak’s Sunset Limited service that travels west to Los Angeles. Depending on your departure city and final destination, in addition to how far in advance you book your ticket, ticket prices for the City of New Orleans train can vary from $2.50 to $214.00.

To take advantage of the scenic views that surround the train as it cuts through some of America’s most breathtaking natural landscapes, the City of New Orleans train comes equipped with a Sightseer Lounge that features panoramic windows, allowing passengers to take in the beauty of the passing scenery.

The City of New Orleans train first started running back in 1947. It was part of the Illinois Central Railroad until 1971 when Amtrak took over. This is the only Amtrak route that serves the state of Kentucky.

Likely just because not as many people are traveling but seemed everyone did not have to sit directly next to someone which was important to me in terms of social distancing during these odd times.
Temperature control/wifi was not great...

The area we were seated in was spacious and I never felt cramped.
The seats were a tad stained, and overall cleanliness could have been improved. The employees also could have been more friendly, they weren't rude by any means but I didn't feel welcome.
Bring plenty of pillows and blankets if your travel time exceeds five hours. Though there's plenty of space, if you want to rest you'll need something softer to lay your head on.

The big seats.
There were too many passengers and not enough seats for the "coach" areas. Even though we had some seats reserved, we had to search for free seats. It would be much more appreciated if you get your own seat number, so you have your seats and you can find them and there ...More
Book your seats earlier.

The staff was nice and the train was easy to navigate.
Ride was bumpy at times, difficult to sleep.
I recommend taking a blanket/pillow if you plan to sleep on the ride. There are outlets to charge your devices, no need to worry about going without your tech.

Plan ahead and you will stay entertained during the entire train ride.

Are there power outlets or USB plugs on the train?

Yes, there are power outlets onboard Amtrak City of New Orleans trains.
