Amtrak Seating Options

Unreserved Coach Seating: On all Amtrak trains, except for Acela Express, you can book Coach Class seats. If you’re traveling a short distance, typically from a city to the suburbs, then unreserved coach seating is made available. These tickets are valid on any train unless restricted by fare paid. While unreserved coach seats are not guaranteed, they feature many of the amenities that you’d expect from standard Amtrak coach seats. Wide, comfortable, reclining seats with plenty of leg room are paired with a fold-down tray and an individual reading light and power outlet right at your seat.

Reserved Coach Seating: Most Amtrak trains feature reserved coach seating, especially on short and medium distance routes. Check the Amtrak schedule before booking your tickets. Amenities in Amtrak reserved coach seating may vary depending on the route. In addition to comfortable and wide seating, all reserved coach seats also come with a fold-down tray, an individual reading light, and power outlets. Your legs can stretch out in coach seating with plenty of legroom, foot rests, leg rests, and curtains for Superliner or Viewliner trips.

Business Class Seating: If you’re booking Amtrak train tickets for a relatively far distance, then you might want to upgrade to business class. With more spacious seats, an extra-large tray table, and power outlet at each seat, you’ll have no problem getting your work done. The additional legroom makes it easy to stretch out, recline, and relax. Since Business Class is in a separate car, there will be less foot traffic in the cabin, which is perfect if you’d like to rest. If the train is equipped with a food service car, Business Class passengers can enjoy a complimentary non-alcoholic drink.

First Class Seating: If you’re riding on Acela Express, then you have the opportunity to experience Amtrak’s premier First Class seating experience. Passengers who are riding First Class enjoy the best amenities, including complimentary food and beverage service, and access to ClubAcela lounges in Boston and New York. One-by-two seating is available in First Class and each seat includes headrests, lumbar support and adjustable arm and footrests. Each seat is also equipped with power outlets, WiFi, and AC to make your journey relaxing and comfortable.

Are there assigned seats on Amtrak?

Amtrak does have reserved seating in coach on Amtrak long distance routes as well as many, but not all short and medium train trips.

Amtrak Baggage Policy

At select origin and destination stations, you can enjoy checked baggage service. Not all trains or locations can handle checked baggage and you should check to see if your train and origin destination stations are equipped to accept check baggage.

If checked baggage is accepted at your departure destination, then you can check your two carry-on items. A $20 excess baggage fee will be charged for each carry-on and personal item above the quantity and size limits. The general baggage policy guidelines include:

  • 2 personal items, weighing 25 lbs. (12kg) and measuring 14 x 11 x 7 in.

  • 2 carry-on items, weighing 50 lbs. (23kg) and measuring 28 x 22 x 14 in.

  • Each passenger can bring two additional bags; however, fees will be collected at the station or onboard the train. Carry-on items can be stored in the overhead storage compartments, under your seat, or in designated baggage areas.

    Are Amtrak tickets refundable?

    Amtrak Ticket Refund & Exchange Policy: If your travel plans have changed, then Amtrak does offer ticket cancellation and refund.Amtrak offers a full refund if the Amtrak reservation is canceled 24 hours or more before departure. Amtrak charges a 10% fee if the reservation is cancelled less than 24 hours. For more detail, there are two options to receive a refund value based on the fare you paid:

    1. eVoucher: Amtrak may provide passengers with an eVoucher, or in some situations a paper voucher, that is valid for future train travel.

    2. Refund: In some circumstances, Amtrak’s ticket refund policy does state that passengers can receive a refund for the amount they paid. If you have paid for a train ticket and have only completed a part of the itinerary, then you are eligible to receive a refund for the remaining trip value. The Amtrak ticket policy is subject to change at any time. If you have specific questions about your circumstance, call 1-800-872-7245 to speak with an Amtrak Reservations Agent for additional details.

    Since Amtrak offers multiple types of tickets, from coach to first class, the refund policy depends on the fare paid. Passenger refunds are applied to trips, so when one type of travel is in a trip, the refund policy is applied to the entire trip based on the primary travel type in the trip.

    • Sleeping Accommodations: All sleeping accommodations Amtrak tickets should be canceled 15 days or more prior to the scheduled departure. The passenger will receive a refund that includes a 10% refund fee. If canceled 14 days or less from the time of departure, the passenger will receive an eVoucher that can be applied to travel within one year. If not canceled before the time of departure.

    • Acela Express First Class and non-Acela Business Class: If canceled before the scheduled departure, then the ticket is fully refundable without a refund fee. If you miss your train, or the ticket is not canceled before the departure date, then the ticket is refundable minus a 10% refund fee.

    • Reserved Coach and Acela Express Business Class: All refunds vary depending on the type of fare purchased. Tickets are fully refundable up to 24 hours prior to scheduled departure; however, a 10% fee will be charged if requested less than 24 hours before. If trip is not cancelled before departure, then the entire ticket value is forfeited and cannot be applied toward future travel. If you purchase a Flexible fare ticket, then it is fully refundable and will not be charged a fee.

    • Unreserved Coach: 10% refund fee is charged for all unreserved coach tickets at all times.
